And the Winner Is....

So my Etsy gift-card contest was a bit of a flop... all in all I only got 24 entries and most of those I had to personally coach on how to enter.  I think before I host any more giveaways I'm going to wait a while. No one seems to be interested in winning anything.

But.... there was a winner none-the less!

Alessia Lingesso!
You're the lucky winner of the 20€ Etsy gift card!
Congrats!

And before all you other readers say that it's unfair and nepotism that my sis-in-law won, I just have to say to you that next time you'll just have to enter the contest for your chance to win. Other potential winners were my husband, mother and just a few neighbours and friends.  I had visions of getting all these new readers and instead the people who were already supporting me had the biggest turnout.

My thanks and love to all who entered and continue to read and follow this blog.

Autoimmunity part 6 - emptiness and gratitude

I have a tickling empty feeling in my chest on the days that I visit my immunologist. It's a sadness and loneliness which I'm not sure what to do with. I'm sure it's always there at some levels, but seeing the doc always brings it to the surface and then I find myself in a coffee shop staring at a grey sky while consuming gluten (in the form of delicious butter cookies) for the first time in 6 months... As if gluten will make the feeling go away.

Dot jump to conclusions, the visit went well.... Although I was surprised to find a different doctor than my usual, he did come in halfway and I got to have two specialists' attention for 15 minutes... Most of which they spent arguing as to whether my disease is more in differential connectivity or lupus. They agreed to disagree when I asked if the treatment would be different in either case. No. It wouldn't.

And I'm doing well! The plaquenil and aspirin have prevented me from feeling too sick for some months now (or is that the yoga or the diet or the meditation?)

So what's with this feeling? What's this hole that opens up in me when I stumble back into the city after having good news (or no new news as the case may be)? Why is it that even after 14 years of doctors appointments, blood tests a go-go, invasive exams and doom and gloom on the internet I still feel a sense of loss every time I see the doc? Am I thinking one day I'll go in for a checkup and they'll tell me I'm not sick anymore? Am I holding onto an unrealistic dream or am I still mourning having lost good health?

Most days I get out of this funk with gratitude. Another six months have passed without my organs being involved in this immune system can-can and I'm feeling better and functioning better than I was a while back. I focus on gratitude and not being in a worse position. I focus and focus and eventually a smile returns to my face.

But I'm allowed to wallow for and hour or so right? Haven't I earnt that? Can't I just feel a little sorry for myself for a bit over a coffee in this lovely historic bar in the center of Milan for a teeny tiny moment?

Ok times up Jess... Off you go! Back to playing the cards you're dealt in the most fantastic and wonderful ways you can. Back to enjoying every moment. Back to being busy living. Times up!

Oh, and no more butter cookies! Even if they did just magically appear on the table. This isn't Alice in wonderland!

SummingUp Sunday 2014: Week 8

Another late one! Sunday was so busy because we were visiting friends in Torino and yesterday I felt too run down to post! It doesn't happen too often these days so instead of beating myself up abut it I just had a little rest in the afternoon.

On Wednesday I had a girls' night out and had a wonderful time chatting over steak at Delicatessen.  Oddly, my steak was presented in a bird's nest made out of hay which was then left on the table for presentation.

I finished Galileo the clown fish and placed him in my Etsy store. I haven't started my next craft yet because I'm still working on the crochet cushion cover from last week (not to mention the quilt and several other gigantic projects that I don't want to think about!)

Friday we went out for dinner with two of Sera's friends and their parents. The place was a bit far and not worth going back to but the girls had a wonderful time. Us moms had some fun too, drinking Baileys in the playroom while 'watching the kids' instead of after-dinner coffees at the table.

Saturday we went into the centre and had a nice wander around via Torino. It was the first time I ever went into Tiger and I was super happy I did. The shop is full of all sorts of random gadgets, foodstuffs, and otherness. Somne of my favorite purchases were: chocolate covered almonds, dill (almost impossible to find in Italy), mosaic stickers kit, sewing cards... what a weird selection for a shop huh?

Instead of presenting you with a short this week I wanted to draw your attention to a great resource for animators that I came across on the WWW.  Animation Scout is a tidy little site put together by Ugur Ulvi Yetiskin which illustrates with animated demonstrations some of the trickier aspects of animation like eye direction and mouth corners.  If you're an animator, head straight over and watch all of the videos... bookmark the site... It WILL come in use sooner or later. If you're not an animator specifically, check it out anyways, the design of the site and the videos might just inspire you to become one!!

Finished another knitting project this week for Sera and since I made two one is up for grabs in my Etsy Shop.  Meet Galilleo!

Teaching Toddlers Crafts - Insegnando Mestieri ai Bimbi

Inspired by this post  on the lovely blog Charlaanne which I follow regularly, I decided it was time to start Sera crafting.

Today I put some leftover plastic window screen in an embroidery hoop and drew a heart on it with a Sharpie. Then I let Sera draw a bit more before threading an embroidery needle (the kind without too sharp a point) and showing her how to sew. I'm pretty amazed at what she got accomplished before her attention was turned to other things, but she was definitely interested and had some fun with it... and she even followed the heart! What a proud mommy I am!

I really believe that teaching kids crafts is so so valuable. A few generations back people had the opportunity to learn these types of skills at home and in a school environment but now there seems to be very little focus spent on teaching manual skills. Sewing in particular is a skill that is not only creative in nature but also very practical.  How many adults do you know who can't sew on a button to a shirt or jacket when the time comes?  I'm glad I'm not one of them.

Here are some more resources on line on how to teach your children to sew... C'mon mums! I want to hear if you try this out for yourselves!

Ho mostrato a Sera come cucire.

Mamme avanti! Voglio sentire da chi tenta questo gioco!

Summing Up Sunday 2014: Week 7

This week we've been at the pool quite a bit, trying to use up our entires because they expire next week.  It's good to get the excercize.

I've also been feeling quite crafty and worked a little bit on Sera's memory quilt and tried teaching myself crochet. Aside from that it's been a pretty nice and standard week with family and friends. We didn't celebrate Valentine's day in any special way but I'm still feeling the love!

  • Fun @ the Pool
  • Zucchini 'Pasta'
  • Quilting chaos - Patchwork disordinato
  • Quilting order - Patchwork ordinato
  • New Phone
  • Don't Say it with A Smart Phone - Non Ditelo con Uno Smart Phone
  • Using the Ipad
  • Crochet - Uncinetto
  • Salumi
