THEWONDERFUL: James Victore

Today I wanted to introduce you to an inspirational guy I came across on one of my internet walkabouts.

James Victore is a New York based graphic designer (and company) with some really amazing work, but more importantly (at least in my case, not currently having any use for graphic designing) is an amazing speaker and has taken it upon himself to share his knowlege and wisdom with the rest of the world via his weekly 'Burning Questions'.

I first heard of him through this 99U speech and have been following along with his burning questions ever since. Every time I hear him speak it's a kick in the pants to getting me back on track either on working on my projects or living the best version of my life (and often the two of those go hand in hand.)

I've selected for you one of his Burnign Questions videos as a bit of a teaser for you to get to know him. Give it a chance and trust me, you'll be hooked!

Oggi volevo farvi conoscere un ragazzo ispirazional che ho trovato durnate uno dei miei Walkabouts sul internet. 

James Victore è un grafic designer Newyorkese con lavoro davvero incredibile, ma ancora più importante (almeno nel mio caso, non avendo alcun neccessità per la grafic design al momento) parla benissimo, eè molto divertente e ha preso su di sé da condividere la conosceva e la saggezza con il resto del mondo attraverso i suoi settimanale 'Burning Questions'. 

L'ho sentito parlare per la prima volta attraverso questo discorso 99U. Ogni volta che lo ascolto è un calcio nel sedere per farmi tornare in pista sia a lavorare sui miei progetti o vivono la versione migliore della mia vita (e spesso le due di quelli che vanno di pari passo.)

Women I Admire - THEWONDERFUL Ana White

Here's is another wonderful example of a female role model for our daughters, part of the series about teaching our daughters about self-esteem.

Ana White

I first came across Ana White while fantasising about building a loft-bed for Sera when she gets older. I haven't done much carpentry in the past but I found her free plans for this loftbed house and I absolutely needed to know more about this woman.

The story goes like this: Ana  found herself building their own house board by board all on their own. It was then that she discovered her amazing talent for drawing up carpentry plans that anyone can make.  She has since offered free of charge hundreds of plans that she says anyone can build.  It is more complicated than assembling IKEA furniture but the satisfaction you get from knowing you created something from scratch is amazing.

So many women are afraid to take on tasks that they see inherently as male. Some women are even afraid to change a light bulb and Ana teaches us that not only can a woman build and create int his way, but also inspire and teach others as well. I hope that my daughter grows into a woman confident enough to look after her home and environment and also to build it herself.  Ana's free plans and inspiration will surely help me to teach at least a little bit of woodworking and carpentry to Sera.

Ho sentito di Ana White quando stavo cercando letto per Sera in forma di casa.  No ho lavorato molto con legno nel passato, ma ho trovato i suoi piani gratuiti per questa casa loftbed e ho assolutamente bisogno di sapere di più su questa donna. 

La storia è questa: Per motivi economiche Ana si trovò a costruire la propria casa a mano, con pezzi di legno. E 'stato allora che ha scoperto il suo straordinario talento per l'elaborazione di carpenteria.  Ritiene che con i istruzioni giusti chiunque può fare. Da allora ha offerto gratuitamente centinaia di piani che lei dice che chiunque può costruire .

E' ovviamente più complicato del montaggio mobili IKEA, ma la soddisfazione che si ottiene sapendo che hai  creato qualcosa da zero è incredibile. Molte donne hanno paura di assumere compiti che pensano maschile. Alcune donne hanno persino paura di cambiare una lampadina.  Ana ci insegna una donna può non solo costruire e creare il suo mondo intorno, ma anche ispirare e insegnare agli altri come farlo. Spero che mia figlia diventerà una donna ache puòprendere cura della casa e anche per costruirela come vuole lei per se stessa. I progetti gratis di Ana e ispirazione sul sito sicuramente mi aiuterà a insegnare e imparare almeno un pò sul lavorazione del legno e carpenteria Sera.

Women I Admire - THEWONDERFUL Oprah Winfrey

May I present to you the first of my posts about finding suitable female role models for our daughters. 

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is a woman who is living proof that with enough will, work and faith you can follow your dreams whatever they might be. She's been one of the wealthiest, most powerful, most recognised cultural icons in America for some time now, but most importantly, she's an example of listening to your true self and living the best life you can.

If you stop to have a look at her personal story you'll find that she is a self-made woman. She didn't have things easy growing facing poverty, prejudice, violence, trauma, hardships and profound loss. Still, Oprah found her way, worked very hard towards her goals and eventually was rewarded for her perseverance starting to work as a news anchor at only 19 years old.  From there her career grew and blossomed to where it is now- an amazingly successful media proprietor, talk-show host, actress, producer and philanthropist.

Her magazine, television network, life classes and website are full of information that helps to lift the spirit. In world where so many people focus on the negative, Oprah always seems to have her face towards the light and searching for the good in all of us. She also helps us to learn how to search for the good inside of us too. On a personal level I have gained much from her collaborations with spiritual leaders and am grateful that she has brought things like meditation and gratitude to the mainstream.

Her beliefs and encouragement help millions of people have faith in themselves and reach their own full and true potential. She has not let the outside world influence her path and has chosen instead to follow her heart. This is truly a courageous and beautiful way to live life and I hope to follow her example.

Oprah Winfrey è una donna che è la prova che con volontà, lavoro e la fede è possibile realizzare tutti i tuoi sogni. E' una delle più ricche, riconosciute e potente icone culturali Americana, ma è sempre un ottimo esempio di ascoltare il vostro vero sé e vivere la vita migliore possibile.

Dalla sua storia personale ci si accorge che lei è una donna self-made . Non ha avuto le cose facili da piccola  e doveva affrontare povertà, il pregiudizio, violenza, trauma, disagi e perdita e dolore profonda. Eppure, Oprah ha trovato la sua strada. Ha lavoratotantissimo per arrivare ai suoi obiettivi e alla fine è stata premiata per la sua perseveranza,  iniziando a lavorare come in televisione a soli 19 anni . Da lì la sua carriera è cresciuta con lei ed ormai lei è un sorprendente successo multimediale proprietaria , talk-show , l'attrice , produttore e filantropo .

Il suo giornale, rete televisiva, lifeclasses e il sito web sono pieni di informazioni che aiuta a sollevare lo spirito. Nel mondo in cui così tante persone si concentrano sul negativo, Oprah sembra d'essere sempre rivolta verso la luce e lotta per il bene di tutti noi. Lei ci aiuta anche a imparare a cercare la bontà dentro di noi. A livello personale ho guadagnato molto dalle sue collaborazioni con i leader spirituali (come Deepak Chopra) e sono grato che lei ha portato certe cose come la meditazione e gratitudine al mainstream.

Le sue convinzioni e incoraggiamento aiutano milioni di persone d'avere fede in se stessi e raggiungere il loro pieno potenziale nella vita. Non ha lasciato che il mondo esterno influisca il suo cammino e ha scelto invece di seguire il suo cuore. Questo è veramente un modo coraggioso e bello di vivere la vita e spero di continuare d'imaparare delle cosa da lei.

Deciding not to write 52 lists.

I had a really great post lined up and ready for you to read today.  It was going to be about Moorea Seal's 52 lists project.

The idea was, I was going to post every Tuesday with a list prompted by Morrea's weekly lists and you were going to read all kinds of things... my favourite albums, childhood and current dream jobs, summer goals and more.  I even had the post scheduled to publish automatically for today at 1pm, but last night, in a feverish dream, I realised that the post just wouldn't be right for this blog. I woke up, unscheduled the post and fretted about ever having anything more to say.

Here are a few of the reasons I un-posted:

1. I don't really believe that I'm interesting enough on a personal level that anyone out there cares what my favourite bands are or what recipes I'd like to try in the next year. I know that it seems like I find myself interesting (otherwise why do I have a blog right?) but the truth is I think that the things I do might be interesting and people might want to know about them, but not too much about me.  Heck, I'm barely interested in myself most of the time!

2. This blog shouldn't really be about my personal stuff. Of course personal stuff slips in here and there, it can't not, but mostly the blog is forming itself into something wholly its own. I'm constantly surprised at how it's shaping up and forming itself and enjoying the process.

3. Though the idea of the 52 lists is wonderful and I suggest anyone out there with a passion for record keeping go over to Moorea's site and follow along, it's more of something that if I did I would do alongside my Project Life album or separately for private use.

4. I don't know if I can commit to anything else at the moment!! From the moment I hit publish yesterday I felt like I was making a promise to you all to keep up with something new for the next 52 weeks! If I even manage to get each of those posts down to 15 minutes at a time then that's still 13 hours of blogging that could either be used this year for better content, or for projects that I'm more interested in; like Hick! for example.

So sorry to any of you out there who this week were dying to know my favourite words! I'm afraid they're going to have to remain a mystery for the moment while I come up with something equally, if not more appealing for you to read!

Holiday Hair Week by THEWONDERFUL Emily M. Meyers

In the middle of this year I fell madly in love with Emily M. Meyers over at The Freckled Fox, a lifestyle blog I've since followed religiously.  Emily not only is gorgeous, but an amazing woman, blogging daily with wonderful inspirations despite having four kids under five years old (the newest of which born only a few short weeks ago!).

If you head over to her blog this week you're in for a treat! She's just finished compiling tutorials for fabulous hairstyles that you can soon your own for a bit of a glamorous holiday look.  I haven't yet decided if I'm going to do the fancy bun or the party bun... I guess we'll just have to see how I feel on the day. Or maybe one or Christmas and the other for New Years?

THEWONDERFUL Ali : Amazing Spiralized Meals

It's Not Pasta!

Ever since starting an AIP-Paleo diet I've had to be more creative about my menu planning. With the lack of grains, legumes and starchy carbohydrates like potatoes to lean on I've had more than my fair share of eating salads and grilled chicken breast. While delicious at times, 5 nights in a row can only lead you to boredom.

Just as I was about to start pulling out my hair from missing pasta Ali and her fabulous blog Inspiralized came to my rescue!  Her blog is packed to the brim with dish after dish of gorgeous looking and absolutely delicious recipes which are either already Paleo-AIP or with teeny tiny modifications can be!

The concept is easy... spiralize vegetables and use them in place of pasta in your recipes.  What's spiralizing? Ali can tell you. How can you do it? Ali can tell you. What's for dinner? Ali can tell you!!

I haven't bought my own spiralizer, but I am using a food processor with a julienne function and it's working out great! I had Ali's BLT Zucchini pasta for lunch without the tomato and it was just gorgeous!

Ali herself is also an inspiration to me as a blogger. She quit her job in June to follow her dream of being a food blogger and in these few short months she's taken both the blogging and food world by storm!  Everyday there are fantastic new posts on her blog and her photography is wonderful (and self-taught!) Her e-cookbook is being released this month and will surely be on my holiday gift-list!  She's a real wonder-woman!

Halloween

Halloween isn't really a big deal here in Italy, though it is starting to catch on. Pretty much every year since I've been here I've been dressing up and hosting parties for the occasion just to be disappointed with the turnout and the costumes (or lack thereof).  The excuse I hear over and over is that Halloween isn't an Italian holiday.  Of course I know that, but doesn't having fun cross over borders?

This year I'm happy to say we had a fabulous Halloween. I was dressed as a movie star in (faux) furs, a slinky black dress and a glamorous turban.  It's so much fun to get really dressed up once in a while. I got a lot of criticism because my costume wasn't scary enough, but I honestly think that real people are much scarier than gouls and goblins could ever be!

Sera was the tooth fairy.  Well, she was actually just a normal fairy but she kept telling everyone she was the tooth fairy and giving a huge smile.  Since her Grandpa was a dentist I see that as a good sign.  Her costume was store bought as I was busy with other things this year and didn't have a chance to be super-creative and mine was put together from things I already had in the house.

We started the 'evening' at 4pm with a kiddie Halloween-birthday party where Sera filled her tummy with cheese puffs and danced and screamed along with the other kids.  Then there was a modified and rushed trick-or-treating in the cortile of our neighbourhood followed by a Halloween dinner with her aunts and uncles.  After that we head over to the Halloween Party hosted by THEWONDERFUL architect and artist Duilio Forte at his home/atelier/workshop where he was hosting several theatre/musical performances for the night. After some exploring, a lot of dancing, socialising and running around at around 11pm the toothfairy went off to the land of nod.

A Little bit of Autumn

As October is nearly coming to an end I thought I'd fill you in on our Autumn so far:

-This year I decided not to carve any pumpkins and instead to draw directly onto the pumpkins wth Sharpie markers. It's a quick solution and though I can't put candles in them they will last a little bit longer this year.  I can't wait until Halloween... Sera wants to be the tooth fairy!

-There are still flowers blooming in our tiny urban garden outside. Until last week I couldn't remember what colour these flowers would be but then as soon as they bloomed I remembered. Pumpkin orange! Perfect for the season.

-Sera and I have found a beautiful park behind her new school. Every morning we arrive a little early and park on the other side of the park so that we can walk through it and listen to the birds. After I pick her up, we do the same ont he way back to the car but this time can stop to walk across a log, collect leaves or pick the last wildflowers of the season.

-I pulled out my old Halloween decorations this week and found this old friend in the box. He's a papier machè cat I made for myself quite a few years back after reading an article about Lori Mitchell's version.  It's clear I didn't stray at all from her design so all the credit goes to her. Check out her other characters!

THEWONDERFUL: Mimi Kirchner

This is the first in a series of posts about artists and people that I admire that I've found during my long rambling strolls through the world wide web.  Please be on the lookout for other THEWONDERFUL posts.

I'd like to introduce you to THEWONDERFUL Mimi Kirchner, art-doll maker, collector of scraps and creative inspiration.

I can't remember when I first stumbled on one of Mimi Kirchner's creations. It could have been when I was doing research for either Mimmi (Sera's Waldorf style doll.  Not the same Mimi of this post, but maybe that's where I subconsciously stole the name) or Princess Penelope, but in any case I began to follow her blog immediately and haven't been able to get enough since.  I'm thrilled that she's allowed me to share some images and info about her and her work with you.

Mimi's work is super stylised and anything but your ordinary collection of dolls. She is focused on out of the ordinary subjects for her dolls such as tattooed strongmen, fish, foxes and more. You can see (and purchase! Hooray!) a selection of her recent creations in her Etsy shop online.  A tattooed lumberjack would make a wonderful, and unexpected gift for any rugged art-doll collector.

The thing I love about her work the most is how her sense of humour and individuality comes through in her characters. Each and every work I've had the pleasure of seeing from her is unique and full of whimsy and joy. Through her work you can really see that she has committed herself to fulfilling her unique and very special role in this world. She's truly an inspiration and I also hope to find whatever it is that I am uniquely gifted at one day.
